If you ask us, purple is one of the most underrated hues on the color wheel. Whether deep, dark and saturated or light and crisp, purple is feminine, sophisticated, warm, and calming. There's a reason people turn to lavender when they want to relax. Trust us, it's not just the scent that has calming properties. The color itself does wonders for the psyche, especially after a long day. Deeper hues of purple, meanwhile, signal opulence, luxury, comfort and style – all things that anyone would love for their home to evoke.
We came across this living room, designed by Betsy Burnham, on Domaine the other day, and immediately thought to ourselves, we'd happily spend a day watching old movies here. Who's got the popcorn? Really, though, don't you just love this room? Design 101: honing your color palate is the easiest way to bring unity to your space. In doing so, make sure you incorporate various hues of the same color, as Burnham has done here. Mix patterns and textures, so that items don't appear to have been purchased as a set. In this case, a velvet sofa is contrasted by a bold ikat patterned pillow, and grounded by a wool trellis rug in a more subdued hue. Bright white walls allow the furniture and colors to stand out in the space; Benjamin Moore’s “Decorators White” is your best bet. It has a coolness to it that will compliment purple and be a great starting place for getting the look of this room. Decorators seem to have put this color in their back pocket, hence the name.
