Style Notes: Decorating with Accent Pieces

Top Decorative Accessories Gold Silver Brass

ONE | TWO | THREE | FOUR | FIVE  | SIX | SEVEN

We talk a lot about the importance of putting together great rooms based on gorgeous pieces of furniture, and designing looks around your decorating style, but one of the things that doesn’t always get a ton of attention around here is the importance of decorative acessories. Accessories do for a room what jewelry and shoes do for an outfit. Sure, you can get dressed in the morning without jewelry, but your look will be much more understated, much more simple. Once you layer on the baubles and add the shoes, the outfit takes on a whole new dimension. The same goes for decorating in your home: you can have a room without any accessories, but it’ll feel bare and boring. Decorative accents add another layer to your space. They make it feel textured, and lived-in, giving your rooms a history, and a story. The best rooms are the ones that have that layered feel, and the worst ones are the ones without any sort of flair. Think of a hotel room: even the well-designed ones feel like, well, a hotel – not a home. A home is a place that feels collected, and therefore, comfortable – and the best way to achieve that feel is to add accent pieces.

To help you get there, we’ll be spotlighting our favorite accent pieces. First up: metallic accents. Go ahead, play with mixed metals. It’ll be fun, we promise. Click the links above to shop, and roll over the image to pin.
