French Country Pots, Planters and Sculptures
Like their English counterparts, French traditional gardens have been cultivated for centuries, captivating visitors from around the world. The French formal garden is known as jardin a la francaise and is fundamentally an exercise in establishing order and symmetry over nature. The ultimate example of this style is found in the gardens of Versailles, though all French country style gardens will express similar values and ideas. From grand palais to simple country gardens, there are a few key elements, which are universal. One is the topiary – trained bushes or trees that are pruned into geometric shapes. Wire urns and large planters often play an important role in establishing this effect which can also take the form of animals of architectural elements. Parterres, or planting beds, accented with clipped hedges and ornamental flourishes like urns or sculptures are another.
