French Country - Decorative Bottles

Evocative of old pharmacies and the folk remedies of the past, mercury glass bottles are a true icon of French country style. Mercury glass, sometimes referred to as Silvered Glass or Varnish Glass, gets its mirrored look from a silver coating inside the bottle walls- not unlike the silvering found inside vacuum flasks. Production of mercury glass peaked in the mid eighteen hundreds, with glass-houses from England, Germany, France, Belgium and the US all using their own secret combinations of silver nitrate and glucose. This silvering liquid was poured into a hole in the bottom of the bottle, where it would then seep between the walls of the bottle. Sometimes referred to as peasants or farmer’s silver, the simple beauty and feminine allure of mercury glass bottles endures.
