French Country - Stools & Ottomans

Whether bench style or circular, providing inner storage or just a great place to rest, French Country style stools and ottomans create an elegant way to take a load off and relax. Ottomans first came into French design in the early 1700’s from, yes, the Ottoman Empire where modern day Turkey is today. In Ottoman homes, they were key pieces for family seating and usually piled high with cushions. When the first ottomans made their way into European homes, they were designed as wall-to-wall benches but were soon downsized to their present style and size. Also known as footstools, tuffets, hassocks and pouffes, they are usually somewhat formal in appearance and button tuft upholstered, however a raw, printed burlap cover is also a popular, more rustic look.
