RELAX, IT’S FRENCH COUNTRY: HOW TO CREATE YOUR OWN FRENCH COUNTRY BEDROOM RETREAT

Ahhhh! That's what it should feel like when you retreat to your bedroom space. Some days it seems like you're running around non-stop between work, errands, keeping house, and a social life. So if you're like me, all you need at the end of the day or the week is a spot to kick up your feet and be a little lazy. Why not let that sweet spot be a place of quiet luxury? I always find that a well designed space, with great composition and serene color and texture, actually does wonders at soothing the senses. Of course your living room can be this space for you, but a bedroom can become a second more intimate living space. A retreat that you retreat to. A bedroom not just for sleeping. Sleep in on a Saturday morning and then browse the September issue of InStyle. Snuggle and play fight with your significant other, your kids or your pets. Stay up late reading the latest book by Nicholas Sparks, Dan Brown or Chelsea Handler (whatever your preference may be lately). Pull out your laptop or tablet and do some online shopping with Coco, Michael or Yves.

Ready to create the backdrop for all this relaxation? A French Country definitely lends itself to the effortlessly stylish intimate living space that is your bedroom. (Or at least what it will be after you get loads of inspiration from this article!) Let's break it down.

Get started with a seriously serene and soft “cool” color on the walls. And by “cool” I mean something in the light blue, green or gray family of colors. The other option is going with a simple pure white, off white, cream, or very pale yellow. Just keep the wall colors quiet. You can compliment the neutral walls with a French Country inspired window treatment; like this soft gray toile pattern. Insert room image.

Up next select some of the bigger furniture pieces to ground the design. Here we have an upholstered head and foot boarded bed with neoclassical silhouette and dark wood trim. This upholstered piece brings touchable softness to the room. Two words: simple elegance. The dresser is white with an antique finish that reveals distinctive and intricate gold details. With these unique anchor pieces, you can really enjoy picking pieces to put the rest of the room together.

The goal of crafting this space is not necessarily to make everything match perfectly; but to link each piece subtly to at least one other piece in the space. The bedside tables speak to the toile in the curtains.

Lastly, the pattern on the table lamp shade, the white antiqued finish on the lamp stand as well as the chandelier. All these are reflecting the significant features of the dresser.

Voila! You're own personal French Country creation! Main thing to remember is don't stress about the details of your bedroom. Even putting it together should be full of leisurely fun. Ahhhh, enjoy!
