When we think of design classics, a few things come to mind, but none more than the Saarinen table. Designed by Eero Saarinen, this table, which started as a dining table but has since, thanks to its daring, effortless design, has been made into end tables, side tables, and various shapes and sizes, works with literally.any.design.style. No, really. Here’s the backstory: In a 1956 cover story in Time magazine, Eero Saarinen said that “the underside of typical tables and chairs makes a confusing, unrestful world,” and that he was designing a collection to “clear up the slum of legs in the U.S. home.” Later that year, he completed his Pedestal Table (1956) with its cast aluminum base inspired by a drop of high-viscosity liquid. And as they say…the rest was history. His now-iconic Pedestal Table is made with abrasion-resistant Rilsan® finish on the base and a tabletop made of solid marble, wood veneer or laminate. These covetable tables have sprung up in just about every style space one can imagine, and they manage to look good with every chair under the sun. Trust us – the images below speak for themselves.
