How to Choose the Perfect Custom Sectional for Your Home

Published

If you’ve spent any time with me, you already know I’m a little obsessed with custom upholstery. It’s one of the biggest categories at Kathy Kuo Home, and one I think about far more than is probably normal! A well-made custom sectional is a marriage of really good construction and beautiful design: a hardwood frame and quality suspension system doing the hard work underneath, and a fabric on top that feels entirely like you.

In our design projects, we lean on custom furniture constantly, especially for the pieces that get the most use. A sectional is the one everyone actually lives on (including the dog who is definitely not supposed to be up there). When something works that hard, I want to specify every last detail. Here’s how I help clients choose the perfect custom sectional for any room in the home.

Custom Sectionals Start with Shape

Shape is the first decision, and it comes down to your room’s layout and how you like to lounge.

Chaise Sectional

A chaise sectional is usually the most compact option and my go-to for smaller spaces. One side is a standard sofa with an arm, and the other extends into a chaise. It’s the best spot to put your feet up and get comfy.

Bumper Sectional

You might be wondering, what is a bumper sectional? It’s the same idea as a chaise, but the “bumper” piece on the end has a back instead of an arm. That little change makes the end work as a proper seat rather than a dedicated spot for stretching out your legs, so it behaves a bit more like a corner sectional while keeping a smaller footprint.

Corner Sectional

The corner sectional offers a classic L shape with a full arm at each end, and you can also add a chaise on one end for extra sprawling room. This is my pick for family rooms that double as everyone’s favorite hangout.

U-Shaped Sectional

A U-shaped sectional is wonderful for entertaining, because everyone faces each other and conversation happens naturally. It’s also the shape to choose if two people want to lie down and face the TV at the same time!

Double Bumper Sectional

Think of it as a very large, very chic bed… but for the family room. Our Adelle double bumper sectional has a seat that’s a full 61 inches deep, with open bumpers on both ends. It is so, so good for lounging and the perfect companion for movie nights.

Get the Size Right

A sectional takes up more real estate than almost anything else in the room, so getting the size right is really about creating a balanced layout, where the sectional anchors the space without swallowing it. Once you know the shape, measure the room twice to make sure your sectional of choice will fit! A few rules I abide by in every project:

  • Leave about 16 inches (give or take a few) between the sectional and the coffee table, the sweet spot for walking through comfortably while still reaching your glass of wine without sitting up.
  • Keep at least three feet clear in key walkways that get substantial foot traffic.
  • Make sure every seat is within easy reach of a surface, even if it’s a little drink table tucked next to the chaise.
  • Choose a coffee table one or two inches lower than the seat cushion; it sounds fussy, but it really makes a difference.

Think About How You’ll Actually Use It

This is where custom sectionals earn their keep, because comfort is personal.

Cushion Fill

Most cushions start with a foam core; what you wrap it in determines how the seat feels and how much fussing it needs to maintain its shape.

A foam core wrapped in down and feather is the plushest, most sink-in option (and my personal favorite), but it requires regular fluffing, so it’s best for a household that doesn’t mind the ritual. Add poly fiber to that down-and-feather blend and you get much of the same softness with noticeably less upkeep, which is the sweet spot for most busy family rooms. A foam core wrapped in poly fiber alone holds its shape with next to no maintenance, while a cushion made entirely of foam gives you the firmest, tidiest seat of all. If you have kids, pets, or a movie-night crowd on the sectional every evening, those last two cushion fill options will make your life much easier.

Sleeper Sectional

If you host often and don’t have a guest room, a sleeper sectional is one of the smartest things you can do for a home. Your guests get a real bed when they visit, and you never need to see it the other 350 days of the year. Our Maude chaise sectional comes in two sizes (113” or 77” for petite spaces) and includes a premium sleeper mechanism and a genuinely comfortable mattress. It’s SO much comfier than you’d ever expect for a pull-out sofa!

Modular Sectional

Modular sectionals let you rearrange as life changes. Position the ottoman at one end to act as a chaise or place it in the middle of the sectional as a stand-in side table. The world is really your oyster. I adore this for the family that’s constantly evolving and needs a sectional that can keep up with their needs!

Find Your Style

The last step is the fun one. The sectional doesn’t have to match everything else in the room, but it should feel like it belongs in your house. So look around. If your home leans modern, with lots of light and not a lot of fuss, a sectional with clean lines and a track arm will feel right at home. If you’re drawn to something more traditional (and I always am), think curves: a roll arm, a gently sloped back, turned wood legs on brass casters. Those details read as collected and a bit romantic, and they never go out of style.

And then there’s the sectional I could happily nap on every day: relaxed and wrapped in a slipcover you can pull off and wash after the kids and the dog have had their way with it. It’s dreamy in a beach house, but honestly it works anywhere you want the room to feel inviting and unhurried.
