While categories and labels are important in the world of interior design, they can sometimes hinder creativity when you go to put pieces together in a room. Words like “industrial” and “french country” draw up two very different images in the designer’s mind—like apples and oranges. But who doesn’t like fruit salad? (I really hope, for the sake of my point, that you love fruit salad). French Country and Industrial Loft can play nicely together in the sandbox if you go about it the right way. Take a look below for some inspiration and tips for combining forces and creating new unique style in your designs:

The kitchen featured above is the perfect example of French country industrial kitchen, and WOAH, is it pretty. A gorgeous white-on-white kitchen, this space features white headboard ceilings, and a white tongue and groove backsplash. Notice how the cabinetry is done in a simple country style. How do you add in an industrial flare for a more standout look? Just add a bit of oil-rubbed bronze hardware. Glass-fronted upper cabinets frame a small kitchen window and serve to brighten the space as well. We’re big fans of putting a sink in an island, making the island the main hub of the kitchen, and that’s exactly what they’ve done here. The island features an undermount, stainless steel sink with a modern spray faucet. Rather than make the space feel decidedly country kitchen, they’ve roughed it up a bit with two industrial style accents near the island: industrial bar stools, and industrial style pendant lights. Light hardwood floors complete the space, tying the space together to create the perfect french country industrial kitchen.

So now you’re in love with the French industrial country look (or at least, we know we are), but how exactly do you start designing? Our advice is to start with French Country. Use the white or neutral basics associated with the style (light hardwoods, white cabinets, etc.) as a backdrop to work with. Then you can go from there and add in industrial accents (lighting, seating, islands, tables, or decor) to create a detailed and layered look to add a cool, urban edge to your kitchen. Why do we recommend this look for the kitchen? The metallic hardware of the kitchen space (sinks, refrigerators, etc.) looks naturally industrial, and the fresh, all-white look of French Country is everything we want in a clean, simple kitchen. Some other standouts from the featured photo below include the eclectic mix of dining chairs, the beautiful pendants, and the hanging rack of pots and pans.
