Anyone else feel like they could use a vacation to a tropical paradise? Haha…me too…always! Well cuties, I have the next best thing: A project reveal for a gorgeous vacation villa that my team and I worked on in Punta Cana, in the Dominican Republic!
“For this luxurious vacation rental property—six bedrooms, staff on-site, surrounded by pool and beach access, world-class golf courses, and breathtaking tropical scenery—we worked with our client to achieve a modern coastal interior design look that also had luxe touches of Hollywood Regency, French Country, and Modern Classic in the mix as well.”
Read on to learn more about how we achieved a design sensibility that was luxurious and unique, but also universally appealing and timeless, given that the property was intended for use as a vacation rental. And if you love this space as much as I do…click HERE to book it for your next Caribbean getaway! Can you already taste the Piña Colada and smell the sunblock?!
A New Build & Grand Plans
Our client—a busy doctor—came to us with this project while the house itself was under construction. She intended to use the space as a getaway for her own family (including her husband and their three teenage children), but also to use it as a vacation rental while not using it herself.
The spacious home includes six bedrooms all with en-suite bathrooms, as well as a formal dining room (our client loves to entertain and had her heart set on spending the Thanksgiving holidays here with friends and family), a formal living room and a more relaxed lounge and TV area, several outdoor dining and sitting spaces, and a super-serene pool deck area with lounge chairs, umbrellas, and an al fresco bar.

Natural Materials, Traditional Silhouettes & Statement Lighting
The tropical locale of this home made relaxed coastal design elements a natural choice, but our client also wanted a slightly more formal and refined living room space, as well as a traditional formal dining room. To achieve this balance, we mixed natural coastal materials—like mango wood, cane, wicker, and rattan—with classic silhouettes, a luxe color palette, and several pieces of show-stopping statement lighting.
“In both the formal living room and dining room areas, we worked with our client on choosing really special lighting—an aqua-hued tiered glass chandelier for the living room and a super-unique piece with multiple orbs of lighting hanging down over the dining table at different lengths.”
These eye-catching lighting choices provided stylish contrast with the clean lines and artfully neutral color palettes of both the living room and dining room. As finishing touches in both rooms, organic wall art and a starburst mirror provided plenty of personality, and color dishware and coffee table sculptures tied everything together in a way that felt like coastal elegance personified.

Poolside Elegance in Punta Cana
Of course one of the very best aspects of a tropical vacay is spending time in the beautiful outdoors surrounded by palm trees and sunshine, with a refreshing pool close at hand! One of my personal favorite parts of this project is the effortlessly chic outdoor living spaces.
“Our client went with durable and weather-resistant teak frames and classic white outdoor upholstery for much of the outdoor seating, and super-sleek white concrete and stone for the tables.”
Vases of tropical blooms, crisp blue-and-white pillows, and navy garden stools rounded out the outdoor decor, while dreamy chaise lounges and outdoor umbrellas by the pool set the scene for plenty of relaxation and bronzing with a good book and a cool beverage (from the outdoor bar, perhaps?).

Vacation Rental Must-Have: Many Bedrooms
In any property you intend to use as a vacation rental, ample sleep space is essential in order to accomodate larger groups and families (especially in a popular vacation destination like Punta Cana, which is an ideal place for events like weddings, bachelor and bachelorette parties, and family reunions). This villa has six bedrooms total (three with one king-sized bed and three with two queen-sized beds).
“Though it was important for the overall design sensibility of the property to feel unified as modern coastal, it also felt right to have each bedroom have its own distinctive look and feel.”
The color palettes for each room vary, but in all of them we were sure to feature woven materials, beach-inspired decor details, and eye-catching wall art. High-quality bed linens are also a must-have for vacation properties and a feature that this home had consistently in each bedroom.

Great Design as an Amenity
The success of this vacation villa design project is a perfect example of how top-tier interior design is, in and of itself, an amenity that increases the desirability of a rental. It makes such a difference to stay in a property that feels curated, cared for, and meant to evoke the comforts of home, as well as the luxury of being on vacation.
In addition to the on-site amenities offered by the PUNTACANA RESPORT & CLUB, the gated community the villa is located within, and the nearby La Cana Golf & Beach Club, the elevated and thoughtful design of this home serves as a special luxury that comes through in each and every room and with each an every furniture and decor choice.

Inspired by the Warmth of the Dominican Republic
Ultimately, the biggest—but most fun and creative—challenge of designing for a large-scale rental property like this one is to create a space that can function beautifully and feel safe, loving, and nurturing to the home-owner, but also to all of the future rental guests. It’s a different set of design skills to create a look that feels both individual and universal.
“The key here that really served as an essential guidepost to work in tandem with our client’s wishlist and mood-boards, was the natural beauty and authentic warmth of the property’s location: The Dominican Republic.”
With so much abundant and breathtaking scenery—vibrant flowers, lush foliage, glowing sunrises and sunsets, and pristine beaches—pulling inspiration for a design that honored the sense of place was an easy task.
