If you’ve spent time exploring Kathy Kuo Home, you’ve probably noticed that certain silhouettes appear again and again throughout our collections. The bergère chair. The canopy bed. Tapestry-inspired textiles. Textural wicker furniture. These are the pieces I consider our brand icons—designs with real history behind them that still feel completely at home in the way we live now. And today, I want to talk about the piece I’m asked about most often: the roll arm sofa.
The roll arm sofa has an elegance that spans centuries. That soft, outward-scrolling arm first took shape in the upholstered settees of 18th-century England, and by the Victorian era, London workshops had refined it into the deep, sink-in silhouette we still covet today. What’s kept it beloved for so long is its softness—the gentle curve of the arm creates a sense of warmth and approachability without ever sacrificing sophistication. It’s both comfortable and oh-so chic, which is a hard balance to strike, and exactly why I keep returning to it!
The Roll Arm Sofa, 3 Ways
Not all roll arms are created equal, and the subtle differences between them can completely change the mood of a room. These are the three silhouettes I find myself using most in design projects.
The Flared Roll Arm Sofa
This is our own take on the roll arm, and I have to admit, I’m a little obsessed. Rather than a full, tightly scrolled curve, the arm sits at a gently flared angle that opens up the silhouette—more of a gentle, tailored roll than the traditional roll arm sofa. When we designed our Amelie silhouette, this was exactly the balance we were after. We softened the scroll, angled the arm ever so slightly outward, and paired it with a subtly curved back and a tailored skirt so the whole piece feels graceful and light on its feet. The result has an ease that feels subtly French. She’s relaxed enough for everyday life, yet refined enough to hold her own in a formal living room.

The Traditional Roll Arm Sofa
This is the silhouette most of us picture when we hear “roll arm sofa.” The frame features a generous, fully rounded arm that scrolls outward from the seat in one continuous curve. It’s the classic for a reason: balanced, welcoming, and endlessly adaptable, whether it’s finished with a skirt for a more traditional feel or exposed legs for something a touch more current. Our Linden sleeper sofa is a classic example of this style. It takes a centuries-old frame and adds in modern comforts like a sleeper mechanism for the best of both style and functionality.

The English Roll Arm Sofa
The English roll arm is wildly loved by the design community, and I definitely have a soft spot for this style. Its pleated arms are lower and set slightly back from the seat, paired with a deep, sink-right-in cushion. Often (but not always), it’s set on turned wood legs, with or without metal casters. It was born in the drawing rooms of Victorian England, designed with plush cushions that encourage lounging, and it still invites exactly that. Our Lorelai sofa captures the look beautifully—low, elegant arms, tailored lines, and those extra special brass ferrules and casters that give it just the right amount of heritage charm.

How to Style a Roll Arm Sofa in Your Home
What I adore most about the roll arm sofa is its versatility and longevity. It pairs beautifully with almost any space, and it’s already proven that it will stand the test of time… so important when you’re investing in high-quality furniture!
In a more traditional home, it’s a natural fit—upholstered in linen and surrounded by antique art, a wood coffee table, and a beautiful patterned wool rug. In a more modern or transitional home, a roll arm sofa pairs nicely with contemporary company like a natural travertine coffee table and a sculptural floor lamp. That gently curved arm brings a softness and warmth to a room otherwise filled with clean lines and hard surfaces.
