If you’re looking to make a visual statement in the master bedroom, the Kuotes (and many interior designers) will point to the nonpareil of bedroom furniture. You guessed it: the canopy bed. Dreamy, structural, and ambient, the canopy bed has made several appearances in history from royal European chambers to bedrooms designed by the most acclaimed interior designers of today.
These beds actually date back to the Medieval period when the draperies swathed around the four posters were used for warmth and privacy, but in modern interior design, they’re just as popular a choice for bedroom furniture—and this “overhanging” trend is on the rise. You can even try a metal canopy bed frame. Today on the blog, we’re covering the several types of canopy beds and bed design (from a platform bed to a canopy frame) you can buy and highlighting some of our favorites here at Kathy Kuo Home. Enjoy, and learn everything you need to know about these beloved pieces!
The Four Poster
If you’re going for the classic bedroom design, look no further than the four poster canopy. These beds are constructed with posts at four corners to support a frame, which is often draped with fabric for an elegant and elevated look. By draping fabric over the bed in a tented style you’ll create a cozy and romantic atmosphere perfect for those who like to retreat to the bedroom to snuggle up and get some “me time.” Leaving a four poster canopy undressed also makes an impactful statement: the bed’s sleek structure gives a room striking lines, height, and a sense of architecture while retaining an open and airy feel.
“Canopy beds are by nature a bedroom focal point. Highlight this focal point by using art, mirrors, or a wall sculpture in the center of the framed space behind the bed.”

The Lit à la Polonaise
“Let’s introduce you to one of the dreamiest canopy styles…”
Are you more of a romantic? If you find yourself always shopping our French Country collection, let’s introduce you to one of the dreamiest canopy styles: the Lit à la Polonaise (pronounced “puh-low-NEZ”). Its extravagant name makes reference to Louis XV’s Polish-born queen consort, Marie Leszczyńska. A Lit à la Polonaise is identified by posts that curve in toward a round coronet at its center. While this style bed is traditionally swathed with luxurious silks and toile, its lovely shape makes a bedroom decor statement on its own for the more modern and minimal bedroom with a classical twist. You’ll find that many KKH Lit à la Polonaise beds take a more modern update on the classic silhouette. Tip of the day: Hang a striking pendant or small chandelier from the coronet to add a centerpiece and contrast the bed’s contours.

While your initial reaction to canopy beds may be that they’re “formal” or “European,” these beds can serve as a gorgeous addition to any design style. You can add accent chairs to the room, too, to take your theme even further and match the bed features. Contemporary designs are sleeker and trimmer than the heavy-curtained and ornate pieces of the past, but they’re equally striking. Contemporary canopy beds , with plenty of clean lines and simple design, also have the allowance to play with color and material in new, inventive ways. Shop some of our favorites below!
